Wassup 2008

October 28, 2008

Remember the Wassup ad that Budweiser did years back? The one that spawned tons of other awesome spoofs (like the superheroes one and Wasabi)?

I like this 2008 one too. Had me chuckling about how current it is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qq8Uc5BFogE

I was looking at a girl’s face and I was trying my darndest to figure out what I felt was wrong. She was a pretty girl. But then I realized that she only smiled with her lips. I’m probably the only one that finds it strange, but it feels like a fake smile.

Currently listening: Wild Horses by Alicia Keys (feat Adam Levine)

Quippy

One thing I really miss about living in the States is the TV there. Not the melodramtic stuff like Grey’s Anatomy (because those Korean/Japanese TV shows give way more pathos without the skanky/sex-sells stuff/emo+blatantly-trying-to-connect-with-you) but more like shows that center around the lives of teenagers that obviously aren’t in real life. Call it my I-missed-out-in-the-90210-years syndrome of something, but there’s obviously something really addicting back it. It probably all started with The O.C and now has culminated into another addiction – Veronica Mars. Sure, back in the day, I figured that a lame name equals a lame show. Then I realized that I watched shows like Final Fu and Springer, and learnt to accept my poor taste in show.

Then one day, innocent ol’ me got suckered into watching one episode, or thirty… Whatever, details details. I tried enrolling in the ten step program to get myself off this show, but unfortunately, each step was named “one more show”. At least it’s rekindled my love for quips, because obviously, not so many people around me enjoy it as much. Sometimes these quips pop out of nowhere, and I have to rein them in before more damage is done. [Side note: "One more show" is a slanted reference to Sid Meier's PC (well, now on Xbox360 also at a good store near you of course) game Civilization, whose latest game has a hilarious trailer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Br1BWPWEdlQ]

For example, once I met this girl and she told me that she left JC and went to work in the theatre for a few years. Although I was incredibly fascinated wanted to find out more about her experience, all I wanted to do was ask her if she worked in Lido or Cineleisure. I was chortling to myself throughout the conversation heh heh.

Oh well. I wish I could write more.

Off to bed. Another day in the trenches awaits.

One more show.

Melee

October 2, 2008

So my cousin got married on Saturday, and it was very beautiful and lovely.

I was struck with the thought that somehow all Singapore weddings have a photo montage of how the couples were before they got together (cue growing up pictures along with the significant parts of their lives) which segues to the two of them meeting and taking lots of pictures together. But really, the most important element is the music. Too cheesy, and it sounds forced. Too rock, and you don’t induce enough tears. It has to be that perfect blend of wedding music which really, is more art than science. And remember, the “Photo Montage Song(s)” (PMS) is different from the “Couple Enter the Ballroom Song” (CEBS). Vastly different. A CEBS typically has to be grander and contain more gravitas, with favourites like

  • From This Moment by Shania
  • L-O-V-E (which ever version the person prefers)
  • Many songs by Celine Dion
  • I’ll Be There For You by Bon Jovi
  • Love is Here to Stay
  • et al

Anyhow, the song that I liked from my cousin’s PMSs list was Built To Last by Melee. Light, pop-py, rock-ish and more of all, makes me want to pick up my guitar and sing a long. Makes no pretense on how terribly simple it is, but just enjoys the moment of the song. What other song has lyrics like “warms the insides like it should”. What is this, talking about love or socks?

Perfect for Fridays.
